DESCRIPTION

Divers describe the PADI Rescue Diver course as the greatest challenge, but the most rewarding they have ever experienced. Why? Because you learn to prevent and manage problems in the water, and gain more confidence in your skills as a diver, knowing that you can help others when needed. During the course, you learn to become a better match by practicing problem-solving exercises until it becomes a reflex. Also, the class is really fun - it's serious, but you laugh a lot while learning. PADI (Junior) Adventure Divers divers 12 years of age or older who have completed the Adventure Dive Underwater Orientation dive may register for the Rescue Diver course.

You must also have completed Emergency First Response Primary Care and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid) training within the past 24 months. You can take this training during the Rescue Diver course. Your instructor may also suggest that you take the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider course at the same time.

ACADEMIC

The PADI Rescue Diver course prepares you to deal with minor or severe emergencies while diving, using a variety of techniques. As you develop knowledge and rescue drills, you learn to spot a problem and respond to it. During rescue scenarios, you practice your knowledge and skills. Topics covered include:

  • Self-rescue

  • Recognize and manage stress in other divers

  • Emergency management and equipment

  • Rescue of panicked divers

  • Rescue of unconscious divers

EQUIPMENT

You will use your basic scuba gear and will need a pocket mask to perform resuscitation in the water. During the exercises, you will be working with an oxygen cylinder, floats, marker buoys, and maybe dummies. Your PADI instructor will explain the equipment you need and can suggest additional parts, such as your own first aid kit, which will come in handy throughout your diving career.
